Pre-registration is required and will provide you with a code and instructions for entry.
We are excited to launch a Jewish mindful meditation group at Der Nister. Our first series will be rooted in the teachings of Sefer Yetzirah — one of the most ancient and mysterious works of Jewish mysticism.
Sefer Yetzirah is a pre-Kabbalistic text that infers that the Hebrew letters themselves are more than symbols: they are the building blocks of creation, channels of divine energy, and pathways into deeper awareness. In this meditation series, we will explore the letters as sources of magic, creativity, and transformation. Through guided practices, chanting, and silent reflection, we will invite the power of the alef-bet to open our hearts, calm our minds, and connect us more fully to the sacred flow of life.
No previous meditation experience is required. This is a welcoming space for all who wish to encounter Jewish wisdom through the lens of mindfulness, presence, and contemplative practice. Together, we will enter into a centuries-old stream of Jewish mysticism in community and allow it to nourish us in the present moment.
Preregister for one class. ($18)
Preregister for 4 weeks. ($54)
Cantorial Scholar-in-Residence at Congregation Or Ami
Congregation Or Ami is dedicated to helping us remember and observe Shabbat in our lives. We want to make Friday night – the beginning of the Shabbat day – a different kind of evening, a holy evening. Or Ami’s very first commitment was to create Shabbat services that would be spiritually and socially satisfying experiences to cap off activity of the week just finished. Our services always include opportunities to welcome guests and new members, as well as moments to sing prayers for health.

Freedom is an Open Heart - Mindful practice & Jewish wisdom for challenging times with Rabbi George Gittleman and Cantor Kerith Spencer Shapiro
Mar de Jade Retreat and Wellness Resort, Chacala, Mexico
Our week together will be a rich mix of sitting and walking meditation, study, instruction, prayer, and song as well as daily yoga. Rabbi George Gittleman and Cantor Kerith Spencer-Shapiro are longtime meditators, and certified Jewish Mindfulness Meditation teachers with years of experience working with people on their inner lives. The beautiful meditation hall where we spend most of our time is just a stone's throw from the ocean. The soothing sound of the surf is a constant companion throughout our time together. The retreat will be mostly silent Saturday evening through Wednesday evening, allowing time for excursion and/or R&R on Thursday and Friday with a Shabbat celebration Friday evening. The schedule will be simple - sitting or walking meditation interspersed with learning and instructions with time to "just be" and enjoy the beauty of Mar de Jade. All backgrounds and levels of experience are welcome.

LMU Annual Kristallnacht Commemoration
"Nazi Looted Art and the Ongoing Fight for Justice"
Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025 | 7 p.m.
UNH 1000, Ahmanson Auditorium
Loyola Marymount University
The Nazi leaders were not only the most systematic mass murderers in history, but also the greatest thieves. Eighty years after the end of World War II, we are still dealing with the ongoing work of restitution. An estimated 100,000 artworks stolen by the Nazis or relinquished under duress have yet to be returned to the rightful owners, including masterpieces like Raphael’s Portrait of a Young Man, which the Nazis stole in Cracow.
In this lecture, Prof. Petropoulos will share his forty-plus years of experience studying Nazi art looting and helping victims and heirs recover their property. This work has included interviewing Nazi art plunderers, examining looted art in a Swiss bank vault, and testifying as an expert witness in court. His scholarship has had practical application, and he will offer reflections on both Nazi plunder and postwar restitution.
This event is free and open to the public, but please be sure to RSVP. There will be a kosher reception following the lecture.
Kerith will be offering a few musical selections at this event.
